Spotlight on Friendship

How Performing Arts Helps Children Build Bonds

One of the most rewarding aspects of running Pixie Studios Theatre School is witnessing the incredible friendships that blossom within our classes and camps. While performing arts is often associated with building confidence, developing skills, and nurturing creativity, it also offers a unique and powerful opportunity for children to form lasting bonds.

1. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

In every performance, from our weekly classes to our theatre camps, children learn to collaborate as part of an ensemble. Whether it’s creating a dance routine, harmonizing in a song, or acting out a scene, teamwork is at the heart of every activity. Children learn to listen to each other, share ideas, and support their peers, all while working towards a common goal.

One of our favourite memories was during a recent camp when the children had to choreograph part of a dance themselves. Watching them brainstorm, share suggestions, and cheer each other on as they rehearsed was a beautiful reminder of how performing arts fosters camaraderie.

2. Building Trust Through Improvisation

Improvisation games are a fantastic way for children to develop trust and build friendships. These activities require quick thinking, listening, and responding to others without judgment. In our classes, we often see shy children coming out of their shells as they realise their peers are there to support them, laugh with them, and celebrate their creativity.

3. Celebrating Each Other’s Success

At Pixie Studios Theatre School, we celebrate not just individual achievements but also the joy of cheering on a friend. During our performances, you’ll often see our students standing just offstage, whispering supportive words and sharing excited smiles. It’s a true testament to the environment of encouragement that performing arts creates.

After our Halloween Theatre Camp performance, we overheard one of the girls telling her friend, “You were amazing!” That genuine, heartfelt support is exactly what we hope to inspire.

4. Friendship Beyond the Stage

The friendships built in our classes often extend beyond the studio walls. Many of our students arrange playdates, attend each other’s birthday parties, and even end up in the same school clubs. It’s incredible to see how the bonds formed through performing arts become a part of their everyday lives.

5. A Safe Space to Be Yourself

Performing arts offers children a safe and welcoming environment where they can express themselves without fear of judgment. This openness allows them to connect with others who share their interests and passions. It’s not uncommon for children to join our classes as strangers and leave as best friends.
